Zi Wei Dou Shu vs BaZi: Differences and Which to Start With

Neither system is more accurate; they look at you from different angles. BaZi (the Four Pillars) reads the strength and interaction of the Five Elements to show the structure of a life and when things rise and fall. Zi Wei Dou Shu (Purple Star Astrology) splits life into twelve palaces, which makes your personality and each area of life easier to see. Used together they give the fullest picture.

How to compare the two on your own chart

The quickest way to see which one speaks to you is to calculate both from the same birth details and compare:

1. Start with BaZi. Note your Day Master and which elements are strong or missing. A birth date alone is enough to begin.
2. Then calculate your Zi Wei chart with the same date, birth hour and sex. Note the main stars in your Life Palace.
3. Compare. Where the two charts describe you the same way, you are looking at your clearest traits; where they differ, keep watching.

• BaZi: enter your birth date to see your Day Master and which element you lack: shows your Four Pillars, Five Elements balance and luck pillars, and works without a birth hour.
• Zi Wei Dou Shu: enter your birth time to see your Life Palace stars and all twelve palaces: shows the fourteen main stars and the Four Transformations; the birth hour is required.

The differences at a glance

One birth date, two charts

Take a fictional birth: born at noon on 15 June 1990 in Taipei, male.

BaZi gives the pillars Geng Wu, Ren Wu, Xin Hai, Jia Wu. The Day Master is Xin metal, born in the Wu month when fire is at its height. BaZi starts by judging how strong the Day Master is: Xin metal in a hot summer month, then which elements are needed to bring things into balance. This chart describes his energy structure, which elements help him and in which years things move more easily or less. His luck pillars start at age 8; he is in the Yi You pillar from 2017 to 2026 and moves into Bing Xu in 2027.

Zi Wei Dou Shu places his Life Palace in Zi with two main stars, Tian Fu and Wu Qu, and Wu Qu takes Quan. His Body Palace is also in the Life Palace. The Zi Wei chart describes personality directly: steady, practical, his own person and willing to carry responsibility. The other palaces fill in the rest: Zi Wei and Tian Xiang in the Career Palace suit managing and coordinating roles; Tai Yang with Lu and Tai Yin with Ke in the Parents Palace point to good support from elders and bosses; Tian Tong with Ji in the Siblings Palace says relationships with peers need more care. He is now in the 36–45 decade of the Property Palace, so home and long-term living arrangements take centre stage.

The difference is clear: BaZi is more like an energy map, showing which conditions help you and when things flow; Zi Wei Dou Shu is more like a user's manual for your life, covering personality, career, love and family one by one.

When to use which

To understand your personality, relationship patterns and the work that suits you: Zi Wei Dou Shu is more intuitive. The twelve palaces divide the work clearly: the Spouse Palace shows how you are in love, the Career Palace the roles that suit you.

To see rises and falls and choose your timing: BaZi is stronger. The balance of the elements, the luck pillars and the yearly pillars show which years run smoothly and which call for caution.

For the fullest picture: use both. Where they agree, you are usually looking at your most obvious traits; where they differ, you have something worth watching.

The ten-year periods do not line up

BaZi luck pillars and Zi Wei decades both run in ten-year blocks, but they are counted differently and usually change in different years. In the example above, BaZi changes pillars in 2017 and 2027, while the Zi Wei decade for ages 36–45 (counted the East Asian way) runs from 2025 to 2034. Read each on its own terms rather than forcing them to match.

Your birth hour matters

Both systems use the birth hour, but Zi Wei Dou Shu depends on it more: the hour decides where your Life Palace is and which palace every star lands in, so a wrong hour gives a completely different chart. BaZi, by contrast, can start with the year, month and day pillars when the hour is unknown. If you are unsure of your birth hour, start with BaZi and calculate your Zi Wei chart once you have found it.
