BaZi Luck Pillars (Da Yun): How the Ten-Year Cycles Are Calculated and Read

Luck pillars (大運, Da Yun) are the stem-and-branch pairs that step forward or backward from your month pillar every ten years, and they set the broad theme of each stage of life. If the natal chart is the map you were handed at birth, luck pillars are the seasons you pass through while walking it. The same chart brings different themes to the surface, and makes different fields easy, depending on which luck pillar you are in.

To see your own, enter your birth date, hour and sex in the BaZi calculator. It lists the starting date and the pillar for each decade, and the result page reads your current pillar.

How luck pillars are derived

Forward or backward

Luck pillars begin at the month pillar. Whether they run forward through the sixty stem-branch pairs or backward depends on your sex and the yin or yang of your birth year.

Yang year (year stem Jia, Bing, Wu, Geng, Ren)Yin year (year stem Yi, Ding, Ji, Xin, Gui)
MenForwardBackward
WomenBackwardForward

With a month pillar of Ren-Shen, forward order gives Gui-You, Jia-Xu, Yi-Hai…, and backward order gives Xin-Wei, Geng-Wu, Ji-Si…. This is why a luck-pillar calculation always asks for sex.

Starting age

The age at which the first luck pillar begins is the starting age. For forward order, count the days from the moment of birth to the next solar-term boundary; for backward order, to the previous one. Then convert at three days to one year.

Seventeen days to the boundary, for example, gives 17 ÷ 3 ≈ 5.7, so the first pillar starts about five years and eight months after birth. Before that, the month pillar itself is taken as the dominant influence.

Two worked charts

Chart 1: a man going backward

A man born 25 August 1979 at 07:00 (fictional). His chart is Ji-Wei, Ren-Shen, Jia-Zi, Wu-Chen, Day Master Jia Wood.

Ji-Wei is a yin year, so a man's luck pillars run backward. Counting back to the Beginning of Autumn (8 August) gives about 17 days, so the first pillar starts in spring 1985. The table marks each decade by its starting year; the change never falls on 1 January but around the same time of year each time.

2025–2034Ding-MaoHurting Officer
2035–2044Bing-YinEating God

The branches Shen, Zi and Chen form a Water trine, so Water (Resource) dominates this chart. The Wu-Chen pillar of 2015–2024 was a decade of Wealth Earth damming that flood. From 2025 the Ding-Mao pillar brings Fire (Hurting Officer) in the stem and Wood (Mao) in the branch: a cold, wet chart is warmed, and the Jia Day Master finds a root in Mao. Read it as a decade for turning what you have learned into your own words and craft, and for working independently.

On the other side, Mao is in a punishment relationship with the day branch Zi. The day branch stands for yourself and your partner, so close relationships may hit some friction in this decade; it helps to know in advance.

Chart 2: a man going forward

A man born 3 November 1992 at 14:00 in Taipei (fictional). His chart is Ren-Shen, Geng-Xu, Gui-Wei, Ji-Wei, Day Master Gui Water.

Ren-Shen is a yang year, so a man's pillars run forward. Counting ahead to the Beginning of Winter (7 November) gives about 4 days, so the first pillar starts in 1994.

2034–2043Yi-MaoEating God

This chart is heavy with Earth, and the Gui Water Day Master is pressed hard by Officer Earth. Water pillars propped it up until 2023. From 2024 Jia-Yin, and from 2034 Yi-Mao, bring twenty straight years of Wood (Output), the element the chart lacks most. Wood holds Earth in check, so read it as moving from a life framed by others' expectations and rules toward one opened up by your own ideas.

Four things to check in a luck pillar

  1. Which Ten God the pillar's stem is to your Day Master. That is the theme the decade amplifies. The Ten Gods guide explains each one.
  2. Whether it brings your Useful God's element. A pillar carrying the element your chart needs is a decade for moving with the current. See how to find your Useful God.
  3. Whether its branch clashes, combines or punishes with your natal branches, especially the day and month branches. Where it does, that area of life tends to shift.
  4. The year or two around a change of pillar. Surroundings and outlook often turn noticeably; many job changes and moves cluster here.

Some schools read the stem as the first five years and the branch as the second five.

Layering annual pillars on luck pillars

If the luck pillar is a decade's season, the annual pillar (流年) is the weather of a single year. It is simply the year's stem and branch: 2026 is Bing-Wu, 2027 is Ding-Wei.

The basic method is to take the big theme from the luck pillar, then use the annual pillar to see when that theme moves. In chart 1, the Wu of 2026 clashes with the day branch Zi, so within the Ding-Mao decade, 2026 is the year when home and close relationships are most likely to shift.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where can I look up my luck pillars?

Enter your birth date, hour and sex in the BaZi calculator. It shows the starting date, each decade's pillar and the annual pillars, and the result page interprets your current pillar. The basic chart needs no account.

Why does the calculation need my sex?

Because forward or backward order is decided by sex together with the yin or yang of the birth year. Change the sex and both the pillars and the starting date change.

What should I do in a "bad" luck pillar?

There is no need to call a pillar bad. A decade of heavier load is also a decade for building strength. Know which theme the pillar amplifies, hold back where expansion is premature and consolidate where you can; that is moving with the rhythm.

Are BaZi luck pillars the same as Zi Wei Dou Shu decades?

Both run in ten-year steps, but they are calculated differently and usually change in different years, so read them separately. Zi Wei Dou Shu vs BaZi compares the two systems.
