BaZi Bone Weight Fortune: How It Works and What It Means
How BaZi bone weight is calculated, what the 2.1-7.2 liang score indexes, why table versions differ, and how to read the traditional poems without treating them as predictions.

What is BaZi bone weight?
Bone weight (称骨算命 or 秤骨算命) is a traditional divination lookup. It assigns published liang values to four birth-time components, adds them, and uses the total to select one of 52 poems.
The arithmetic is reproducible. The interpretation is a traditional cultural framework, not a scientifically validated personality, career, relationship, health, or forecasting assessment.
The method is traditionally attributed to Yuan Tiangang, but the surviving official Tang histories describe Yuan as a physiognomist; they do not establish that he authored the later numerical table. The source-focused history page separates that record from later attribution.
The calculation in one line
Year weight + lunar-month weight + lunar-day weight + birth-hour weight = total bone weight
| Component | Required input | Important detail |
|---|---|---|
| Year | Sexagenary year (干支) | It is not determined by zodiac animal alone |
| Month | Lunar birth month | Do not substitute the Gregorian month |
| Day | Lunar birth day | Convert the recorded civil date first |
| Hour | Recorded two-hour period (时辰) | An unknown hour must not be replaced with noon |
Use the complete bone weight chart to audit every value, or enter the recorded date and time in the free bone weight calculator.
What does the 2.1-7.2 score mean?
It means only that the four values sum to one row in the table. For example, 3.7 liang selects the 3.7 poem. It does not mean the person is above or below a percentage of the population; no population distribution is used.
The old poems use strong social-rank language. Lower rows often mention scarcity, labor, or limited support. Upper rows often mention wealth, office, or status. Those are themes in the text, not verified facts about the person.
How to read a result responsibly
- Verify the four inputs and table values.
- Read the original poem before any paraphrase.
- Translate historical rank, wealth, and family imagery as period language.
- Use a line as a reflection prompt, not as evidence for a decision.
- Do not use it to diagnose health, choose treatment, judge a partner, or forecast financial outcomes.
If a severe verse causes distress, remember that the method compresses all inputs into only 52 rows. It cannot establish an individual future.
Why calculators sometimes disagree
Published bone-weight tables are not uniform. Some sites use different year or day values, and many do not identify an edition or manuscript. We have not found primary evidence that proves the common modern numeric table belongs to the San Ming Tong Hui or Yuan Hai Zi Ping.
This calculator therefore makes a narrower claim: it implements the exact table shown in the lookup-table article. A result is reproducible only against the same table version and the same calendar inputs.
What if the birth hour is unknown?
Do not invent noon. The hour contributes 0.6-1.6 liang and can change the matched poem. Recover a birth certificate, hospital record, family note, or a reliable time range. If only two candidate periods remain, calculate both as explicitly labeled scenarios rather than presenting either as certain.
Bone weight versus a Four Pillars chart
Bone weight reduces four lookups to one score and one poem. A Four Pillars chart preserves the year, month, day, and hour stem-branch pairs, so it offers more calendar-derived structure. Its personality, career, relationship, and timing interpretations are still a traditional interpretive framework, not validated assessments.
Use the calculator when you want to inspect that richer structure, not because a full chart scientifically proves a fate claim.
Frequently asked questions
What is a good bone weight?
There is no evidence-based threshold for a "good" life. Some traditional poems become more favorable as the table number rises, but the number is not a real-world quality score.
Is the calculation itself accurate?
It can be arithmetically correct and reproducible if the recorded birth time, lunar conversion, sexagenary year, and table version are fixed. That does not validate the poem as a forecast.
Where can I verify my result?
Use the calculator, then compare its four-row breakdown with the full year, month, day, and hour tables. For the attribution question, read the Yuan Tiangang source audit.
