BaZi Consultation Guide: What Masters Charge, How to Choose One, and What to Prepare
Before you pay for a BaZi consultation, know three things: how practitioners charge (per session, per hour, per item, written reading), what drives the price up, and how to tell whether a master's claims rest on the chart. This guide covers selection criteria, what to prepare, six warning signs, and which questions a free calculator already answers, so your money goes where human judgement is actually needed.

Before you pay for a BaZi consultation, get three things straight: how the money is charged, what makes one reading cost more than another, and how to tell whether the master's statements rest on your chart. Once you know these, an in-person session in Singapore, a video call with a master in Kuala Lumpur, or a written reading by email all become easier to judge.
This guide does not recommend particular practitioners or quote a "standard price", because there is none. It covers how to choose, what to prepare, when to walk away, and which questions a free BaZi calculator already answers before you spend anything.
How BaZi consultations are charged
Four models are common. Find out which one applies before asking the price.
| Model | Usually includes | Ask first |
|---|---|---|
| Per session | One in-person or video meeting, often with a rough time limit | Whether overtime costs extra, and whether several questions are allowed |
| Per hour | Billing in 30- or 60-minute blocks | Whether chart preparation time is counted |
| Per item | Compatibility, wedding or business dates, naming, annual forecast each priced separately | Whether items can be combined, and whether explanation is included |
| Written reading | A document or voice note, no live exchange | Length, whether follow-up questions are allowed, turnaround time |
Five things drive the price: the master's reputation, in-person versus online, the scope (one question or the whole chart), whether you get a written report, and whether follow-ups are included. With the same practitioner, a written reading is usually cheaper than a sitting, and a full-chart analysis costs more than a single question. Fees in Singapore and Malaysia span a very wide range, from modest online readings to premium in-person sessions that cost many times more.
One useful test: the price should scale with what you receive, not with how alarming the reading sounds.
How to choose: five things good masters do
- They verify your birth data first. They ask for the birth time to the minute and the birthplace, and they pay extra attention to births in the 23:00 hour or near a solar-term boundary. They do not start reading from the date alone.
- They can name the rule. When they say "your relationships move this year", they can tell you which stem or branch of the year meets which pillar of yours. You need not follow the explanation, but they must be able to give it.
- They separate the chart from your life. A good master says "the chart shows this tendency", not "this will happen to you".
- They do not close with fear. They do not pause mid-reading to warn that something terrible will happen unless you act, and then offer the remedy for sale.
- They give you something to take away. Your chart, the key conclusions and the advice in writing, not just a conversation you will half-remember on the way home.
Six warning signs
- Reading without your birth hour. A chart missing the hour pillar is missing a quarter of its information, and the luck-pillar start cannot be calculated.
- Fear first, sale second. The conversation turns quickly to cures, lucky objects, name changes or rituals that cost several times the consultation fee.
- Guaranteed results. "Your ex will come back" or "you will be promoted this year" is sales talk, not BaZi.
- Refusing to explain. Asking for the basis gets "it's a family secret, you wouldn't understand".
- Upselling the conclusion. The session ends without an answer; the answer costs extra.
- Changing your birth time. Suggesting "let's use a different hour" to produce a nicer chart. A different time is a different chart, not a more accurate one.
What to prepare
Bringing your chart changes what one session is worth.
- Confirm your birth data. Check the birth certificate for the date, time to the minute and city. Note whether daylight saving applied, and remember that Singapore and Malaysia kept UTC+7:30 until the end of 1981.
- Cast the chart first. Use the BaZi calculator to get your four pillars, Day Master, Five Elements, Ten Gods, luck pillars and annual pillars, and keep the result page. Knowing your Day Master and current luck pillar lets you follow the reading as it happens.
- Narrow your questions. Write down the one or two things you most want to ask (a job change, a relationship, a move, timing) rather than "read everything". Specific questions get useful answers.
- Bring known facts. Major events of recent years (job changes, marriage, moves, illness) with their years. When the master discusses your luck pillars, you can check the fit on the spot.
What a free calculator already answers
Not every question needs a paid sitting. These you can settle with a tool first:
- Four pillars, Day Master, Five Elements, Ten Gods: all in the chart. See how to read a BaZi chart.
- Strong or weak Day Master and favorable elements: the favorable-elements card on the result page; the method is in the Useful God guide.
- Which luck pillar you are in and when it changes: listed decade by decade; see luck pillars explained.
- This year's theme: the result page reads the current year against your chart.
- Two people together: the compatibility calculator gives a free summary first.
What is worth paying a person for is judgement that combines the chart with your specific situation: choosing between two decent options, whether to continue a relationship, whether to act at a particular time. The tool supplies the material; the master helps you weigh it. Our BaZi reading page explains what the free online reading covers and where it stops.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much does a BaZi consultation cost?
There is no standard price. Written readings, single-question sessions and full-chart analyses differ widely, and well-known masters charge several times what others do. Rather than asking "how much", ask "what does this price include, and can I follow up", then judge whether price and content match.
Is an online reading as good as an in-person consultation?
Each has its strengths. Online is usually cheaper, more convenient and leaves a written record. In person allows more back-and-forth and immediate follow-up. If you want a complete written interpretation, online is enough; if you want to talk through one hard decision, a sitting suits better.
How can I tell whether a master is accurate?
Compare against what you already know. When the master describes your luck pillars for recent years, does the direction match what actually happened? And can they name the rule behind each claim? "Accurate" is not sounding mystical; it is being coherent and matching the facts.
Do I need a master at all?
Not necessarily. The chart, Day Master strength and luck pillars are available from a free calculator, and this site explains how to read them. A master's value lies in weighing the chart against your specific situation. Exhaust what the tool can do first, then decide whether to pay.
