What Is BaZi Compatibility?

You meet someone and the chemistry is instant. Conversation flows. You finish each other's sentences. Six months later, you're baffled by arguments that seem to come from nowhere, over things that shouldn't matter.

BaZi compatibility (八字合婚) is the traditional practice of comparing two Four Pillars charts through Day Masters, Earthly Branches, Five Elements, Ten Gods, and timing symbols.

Chinese families have historically consulted BaZi practitioners before marriage. Historical use is not scientific validation: this is a traditional interpretive framework, not a proven predictor of attraction, safety, relationship quality, or marriage success. A Reproducible Two-Chart Example

The following fictional inputs illustrate the calculation, not a real couple or a relationship outcome. Both use the Gregorian calendar and local civil time at UTC+08:00, with true-solar correction off. The calculation uses the default Zi-hour day-change convention; neither input is near that boundary.

In this calculation, Water generates Wood, so the Day Master relationship is B → A. The two-way Ten Gods labels are 偏印 (Indirect Resource) for B relative to A and 食神 (Eating God) for A relative to B. The direction matters: the label changes with the reference Day Master.

These are calculated categories within the traditional system. “B generates A” does not demonstrate that B provides emotional support, and the Ten Gods labels do not measure either person's behavior. A useful discussion prompt is: “When one of us asks for help, what kind of response actually feels supportive?” Answer from experience rather than from the chart.

Branch labels also need context. A pair belonging to a Three Harmonies group is not, by itself, a complete three-branch group or proof of elemental transformation. For example, the 辰 and 申 pair in these charts lacks 子 across both charts. Do not turn that partial pattern into a claim that a full Water formation has been established.

Why Simple Zodiac Matching Falls Short

You've probably seen those charts: "Rat is compatible with Dragon and Monkey, incompatible with Horse." That's based on the Earthly Branch of your Year Pillar alone -- one-eighth of your chart. It's like judging a book by the color of its cover.

A full BaZi comparison looks at all eight characters in each chart rather than only the Year Branch. This adds more symbolic context, but it still does not produce a scientifically validated relationship score.

The Four Dimensions of Compatibility

1. Day Master Chemistry

Traditional comparison starts with the two Day Masters. A Heavenly Stem Combination (天干合) is interpreted as an affinity or coordination theme; it does not prove immediate attraction.

The five natural combinations:

Jia Wood (甲) + Ji Earth (己) -- The tree roots in the soil. Ambition meets nurturing. One partner drives growth, the other provides stability.

Yi Wood (乙) + Geng Metal (庚) -- The jeweler shapes the gem. Power meets grace. There's an intensity here, but also mutual refinement.

Bing Fire (丙) + Xin Metal (辛) -- Sunlight transforms metal into brilliance. Warmth melts walls. The Fire partner draws out the Metal partner's hidden beauty.

Ding Fire (丁) + Ren Water (壬) -- Candlelight on the ocean. An intimate, almost mysterious connection. Passion meets depth.

Wu Earth (戊) + Gui Water (癸) -- The mountain shelters the rain. Protective and tender. One partner provides the structure, the other the emotional flow.

If two charts form one of these combinations, treat it as one traditional discussion signal, not proof of a relationship foundation.

2. Earthly Branch Harmony

The Earthly Branches -- especially the Day Branch (the traditional "Spouse Palace," 夫妻宫) -- are used to discuss daily-life and domestic themes.

Six Harmonies (六合) are traditionally read as easier-coordination themes. They cannot establish cohabitation quality or daily compatibility:

• Rat + Ox
• Tiger + Pig
• Rabbit + Dog
• Dragon + Rooster
• Snake + Monkey
• Horse + Goat

Three Harmonies (三合) create broader alliances:

• Tiger + Horse + Dog (Fire alliance)

Clashes (六冲) are the opposite -- branches that create fundamental tension:

• Dragon vs. Dog
• Snake vs. Pig

A Day Branch clash is traditionally interpreted as a domestic-friction theme. It cannot establish that a couple actually disagrees about home life. Compare that theme with observed routines and preferences before treating it as relevant.

3. Five Element Balance

Five Element balance adds another symbolic layer to the traditional comparison.

Practitioners compare elemental strengths and gaps and use complementarity as a relationship metaphor. Picture it this way:

For example, a reader might use Wood and Water as a metaphor for initiative and support. This does not establish that a person with more Water replenishes a partner emotionally. Likewise, shared Fire symbolism does not show that a couple argues more. Ask what each person actually does during stress, and use those observations to evaluate the metaphor.

Within this framework, a more balanced combined chart is traditionally described as complementary. It does not determine relationship quality.

4. Ten Gods Alignment

The Ten Gods are symbolic categories used to discuss relationship expectations and roles.

Some traditional readings use Wealth and Officer categories as spouse symbols under gender-specific conventions. These conventions are symbolic labels, not evidence of anyone's preferences, identity, or ideal partner. The worked example above instead shows the two-way Day Master mapping explicitly.

Practitioners compare whether one chart's symbolic themes appear to complement the other's. This can generate questions for discussion, but it cannot establish what either person needs or offers in real life.

Questions to Discuss, Not Relationship Warnings

A chart pattern can suggest a topic; it cannot diagnose a relationship.

• Day Branch clash: Do daily routines or household expectations actually differ?
• Identical Day Masters: Where do shared preferences help, and where is compromise needed?
• Similar element distributions: What support does each person say is missing?
• A controlling-element relationship: How are decisions and responsibilities shared in practice?

Do not infer conflict, control, or safety from these symbols. Real behavior takes priority over an interpretation.

The Timing Factor

Traditional BaZi also compares both people's Luck Pillars as timing themes. These are not measured forecasts that some decades will be better for a relationship.

You might meet the right person during a challenging Luck Pillar, where external stress puts pressure on the bond. Or you might have years of easy harmony followed by a period where both partners' Luck Pillars bring conflicting elements.

This is why Chinese astrology considers timing alongside compatibility. The question isn't just "are we compatible?" but "are we compatible right now, and what's coming?"

A supportive timing label is not evidence that a relationship will fare better. Discuss actual commitments, constraints, and plans alongside any symbolic timing theme.
