How to Find Your Five Element Attribute

The quick answer: your primary Five Element attribute is determined by your Day Master — the Heavenly Stem of your Day Pillar in a BaZi chart.

Here's how to find it in three steps:

1. Enter your birth details (year, month, day, and ideally birth hour) into a BaZi calculator
2. Locate your Day Pillar — it's the third pillar from the left in a standard four-pillar chart
3. Look at the top character (the Heavenly Stem) of that pillar — that's your Day Master, and its element is your core Five Element attribute

That's it. If your Day Master is 丙 (Bing), you're a Yang Fire person. If it's 癸 (Gui), you're Yin Water.

Day Master (日主)

Your Day Master is the Heavenly Stem of your Day Pillar. It represents your core self in BaZi analysis — your fundamental nature, how you process the world, what energies you naturally carry. This is what modern BaZi practitioners use as the anchor for chart interpretation.

When someone who studies BaZi professionally asks "what's your element?", they mean your Day Master.

Nayin (纳音)

Nayin is an older system that assigns elements to pairs of Stem-Branch combinations in the sixty-year cycle. Each pair gets a poetic name — things like "Gold in the Sea" (海中金) for the 甲子/乙丑 pair, or "Fire on the Mountain" (山头火) for 甲戌/乙亥.

This is the system behind most of those popular "birth year element" lookups you find online. When someone says "I was born in 1990 so I'm Metal," they're typically using Nayin based on their birth year.

Which one should you use?

Both are legitimate traditions, but they serve different purposes. Day Master is the foundation of BaZi chart reading — it's what you need for understanding personality, compatibility, and timing.
