Career (Official) Palace in Zi Wei Dou Shu: Meaning and Stars
Also called Career/Official Palace (事業宮)
The Career Palace (官祿宮), also called 事業宮, describes the roles that suit you at work, your working style and the direction of your career. Scholars in old China made a career of holding office, so it was named the Official Palace (官祿). Today it covers your job, your studies and everything you put real effort into.

What the Career Palace means
The Career Palace describes the kind of work that suits you. With Zi Wei in the Career Palace, management and coordination suit you; with Tian Ji, planning and analysis; with Qi Sha, pioneering work that needs drive; with Tian Tong, you prefer a relaxed environment where you can use your people skills.
It also shows how you take on responsibility: whether you like to lead or prefer to do your own part as well as possible, and whether a large, stable organization or your own business suits you. During school years, the Career Palace is also read for study and exams.
How to read it: the three-sided square
The three-sided square (三方四正) of the Career Palace is the Career Palace itself, the Spouse Palace opposite it, and the Life and Wealth Palaces in the trine positions. The Career Palace is one corner of the Life Palace's three-sided square, so career is read together with personality and how you earn.
Because the Career Palace faces the Spouse Palace, work and love affect each other: your partner may be a real help in your career, or a heavy workload may strain the relationship. Both sides need looking after.
What work suits you
To judge which careers suit you, you cannot look at the Career Palace main star alone. Look as well at the character in your Life Palace, the way you earn in your Wealth Palace, and the auspicious and malefic stars and Four Transformations in the three-sided square. A chart gives direction and strengths; the final choice still comes from combining them with your interests and real-world circumstances.

When the Career Palace has no main star
With no main star, the Career Palace is read through the main stars of the opposite palace, the Spouse Palace. It means your career direction is more flexible: you may have switched tracks a few times, or your partner or business partners may shape your career more than most.
The Four Transformations in the Career Palace
- Hua Lu
- Work goes smoothly with plenty of opportunities. You enjoy what you do, and it tends to pay off.
- Hua Quan
- Strong ambition and a gift for leading. Going after a management role or being your own boss suits you.
- Hua Ke
- Your expertise is recognized and your reputation is good. Fields that depend on trust and word of mouth suit you.
- Hua Ji
- You invest deeply in work and feel a lot of pressure, and work easily becomes a source of worry. Remember to leave time for the rest of your life.
A ten-year period in the Career Palace
When a ten-year period (大限) reaches the Career Palace, it is a pivotal decade for your work. Promotions, job changes, starting a business or professional breakthroughs often come now, and work takes up much of your time and energy. With a bright main star and Hua Quan or Hua Lu here, results come more easily. With Hua Ji, the pressure is high and so is your commitment; make sure work does not crush the rest of your life.
Making the most of your Career Palace
Start by working out the kind of work that suits you: leading, planning, executing, coordinating or building something new. When choosing a job, put the role ahead of the title. If your current job looks very different from what your Career Palace describes, consider whether you can change how you work in your current position before assuming you need a new job.

Yes. Official Palace (官祿宮) is the traditional name; today it is often called 事業宮, the Career Palace. It covers work, study and career development.
Can the Career Palace show what job suits me?
It can show the type of work and the role that suit you, but read it with the Life and Wealth Palaces, then combine it with your interests and real-world circumstances.

Yes. During your school years the Career Palace also covers study and exams, read together with the Parents Palace (paperwork and qualifications) and the Life Palace. With Hua Ke, Wen Chang or Wen Qu in the Career Palace, study and exams often go more smoothly.
